Regardless of the area you live in, every neighbourhood has its benefits and its downfalls, and residents all have different opinions on which features are most important. Is it transit accessibility? Good schools? Crime rates?

Toronto Life partnered up with urbanists, economists, sociologists, and information scientists at the Martin Prosperity Institute, a think tank at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, and ranked Toronto’s 140 neighbourhoods using weighted data pooled from 10 categories:

  1. Housing (15%) affordability, appreciation, and quality
  2. Crime (13%) number of incidents and type per neighbourhood
  3. Transit (11%) number of overcrowded routes and stops per sq km
  4. Shopping (11%) number of grocery, hardware, and pharmacy stores per sq km
  5. Health (10%) number of healthcare providers per capita, amount of air pollution, tree coverage, and green space
  6. Entertainment (10%) number of sports facilities, bars, and restaurants per sq km
  7. Community (8%) street beautification efforts per sq km, plus voter turnout
  8. Diversity (8%) number and proportion of various ethnicities
  9. Schools (7%) number of schools and performance in the Fraser Institute’s report
  10. Employment (7%) the number of jobs and businesses per capita, plus unemployment rates

More information about the methodology can be found on the Martin Prosperity Institute’s website.
